To become good at something means accepting that you will first be bad at it for a long time. 2025 was the year in which I finally made the transition from lifelong lover of listening to music to a lover of creating and mixing music. And I’ve become obsessed with my own art. In this Rick Rubin interview he tells us about why it's important to make art for oneself and it affirms my obsession with my own music. And my music is bad. And I love it. And it’s only kind of bad because I know how good it can be. One day. What I love about making music is that I can record my art and listen to it all day for days/weeks/years at a time. I can record something tonight and listen to it tomorrow morning on my home stereo, then on my bike speaker on my way to work, and then in my headphones all day while I saw wood. It’s an amazing gift it is to be obsessed over ones own creations. ANYWAY, the point of all this is that to be good at something you first have to be bad at it for a long time! And I’m still bad at it but I’m getting so good at fixing my mistakes. I think that’s all good art is: learning how to fix your mistakes. Bob Ross I think said that there are no mistakes, only happy accidents? When I was a wooden boat builder in Philly, one of our mottos was “if you ain’t fixin a mistake, you’re probably making one.” Get good at unfucking your fuckups and keep chasing that art that turns you on.
